15/06/2017 - Dinner by Heston Blumenthal

Location: Crown Towers, 8 Whiteman St, Southbank VIC 3006

Finally we went to this famous place in Melbourne at crown to enjoy the dining experience owned by the famous chef - Heston Blumenthal. The place was rather dark and we actually couldn't find the entrance to the restaurant until we tapped on the door and it opened!

We were assigned to a nice cosy corner when we told them about our reservation. The waitress came by to explain the daily special and we were all busy studying the menu to determine which of the starter, main and dessert that we should order. The c behind the name of the dish refers to the year of the recipe which inspired the dish.

After we ordered, there was some bread accompanied with really good butter to start off the dining experience. The bread was a bit on the hard side but the butter was really nice and creamy!

Cute butter which tastes really awesome!
Everyone ordered a cocktail / mocktail which was said to be special but I felt that it was quite normal. Even the glasses look the same for 2 different cocktails!

It was a party of 5 but I only included the food ordered by myself and my girlfriend as shown below:

  • Frumenty (c. 1390)
  • Rice & Flesh (c. 1390)
  • Lamb & Cucumber (c. 1830)
  • Roast Groper & Green Sauce (c. 1400)
  • Tipsy Cake (c. 1810)
  • Ice Cream with Vegemite (c. 1920)

The grilled octopus with the broth made it a really good combination as a starter. I finished everything!

I personally didn't really like this dish. On hindsight, it might be because of the kangaroo tail which turned me off.
Surprisingly lamb went pretty well with cucumber but the lamb had a strong smell. It was quite a heavy main for me.
Fish was pretty well done but the girlfriend didn't expect that it was fish and thought that clams would be served instead. It was a boo boo for her.
I was the only one who didn't order the infamous tipsy cake but I enjoyed this dessert quite a lot. You would have to eat a little of everything to enjoy this salty and sweet dish.
The infamous tipsy cake which was quite sweet but the pineapple did provide some sort of relief but I felt that it wasn't enough. It would have been better if they toned down the sweetness of this dish. Girlfriend doesn't like this at all cos it was too sweet for her.
Damage:  A whopping 154AUD per pax excluding tips and includes 1 cocktail. It was a good dining experience. The service was very good. Occasionally you would see fire outside the restaurant because of the daily fire ritual organised by Crown. It can be quite scary if you are sitting by the window which does offer a good view of the city.

See scary fire right outside restaurant!

05/06/2017 - Embassy@97

Location: 97 Fitzroy St, St Kilda VIC 3182

We went to St Kilda on a Monday and realized that a couple of Entertainment book restaurants were closed, so we chose this one. At first I was quite unimpressed with this place cos it look empty and small but the food turned out to be really good! It was so good that I actually think we would be back again!

We ordered the following:

  • Escargots
  • Eye Fillet with Mushroom Sauce
  • Seafood cooked in bisque and aged brandy with baguette
  • Dessert platter for sharing
This plate of escargot was good but I feel that its a tad too small for 16 AUD. I was hoping for more pieces.

This is a must try. The seafood is pretty fresh and the sauce is really good with the baguette. The only gripe is that we only had 4 small pieces of bread!

The eye fillet is really well done and goes well with the mushroom sauce. The mashed potato is quite nice too.

This is a dessert platter of  5 desserts. Its great for sharing and it has crepe, mousse, pear, ice cream and creme brulee!
Damage: ~78 AUD. With the entertainment book, we had a 25% discount which reduced the bill down from a 3 digit number to a two digit number. Do remember that this place closes on Tuesday but is one of the few restaurants which is open on Mondays. You are welcome.
